Calling all aviation enthusiasts !!
I want to pitch an idea, but I need your help.
First, a bit of background. Ever since I was a young kid, I dreamed of learning to fly. After many years of dreaming, I took the plunge, found a bit of money and started taking flying lessons. It was really awesome but after 7 hours of training, the money ran out and I was forced to stop.
So, I did the next best thing I could, I downloaded Flightgear and fired up an old laptop. I fly the Cessna 172 because this is similar to the Sling 2 I was training on. The problem is that the laptop screen is so small and I can’t read the instruments. I decided it was time to design my own physical instrument panel with life size gauges. It is early stages of the project, so everything is still very much concept at the moment. I hope to one day further this project to include a motion platform.
I know there are many passionate aviation enthusiasts out there, just like me, who would love to fly but who are also short of cash. For an open-source program, Flightgear is really great and in my VERY limited experience, does indeed simulate actual flying fairly accurately.
So, here is the pitch. I would like to offer this project at minimal cost to all aviation enthusiasts. Let’s face it, if you can’t afford to fly, you probably also can’t really afford to buy expensive simulator hardware. I offer no guarantee that this will work since I am not an electrical or software engineer, but all designs, source code and electronic schematics will be provided at a minimal cost to download. I will eventually offer these fully assembled instruments for sale for those people who are not able to or who are not interested in DIY.
